Epic Series Fresno/Clovis

On March 31st, 2018 Sierra Meadows Park in Clovis, California played host to the latest event put on by Epic Series OCR. The hybrid OCR/Functional Fitness competition is gaining a reputation for having the perfect blend of obstacles combined with functional fitness movements that make this my personal favorite race series. Epic’s motto of “more fun, less run” means your name doesn’t necessarily have to be Magnus to win, but a strong strength base will certainly help you complete the course.

With several events held each year in the Southern California area, Epic has gained almost a cult following in the ever-expanding world of OCR for athletes who are tired of running the endless miles associated with typical OCR events. Epic’s main course offers 25 obstacles all located in the space of a football field with a total distance of around a mile and a half. The course offers the same obstacles scaled into 3 different categories including competitive male/female and open class. Male and female competitive obstacles must be finished completely while open class is a pretty much a free for all. While volunteers are stationed at each obstacle along the way, task completion in the competitive heats relies mostly on the honor system.

Imagine looking down at a regulation 400-meter track. Epic basically puts their entire event into this small space! The breakdown of their system generally includes running a lap carrying something awkward, then completing a row of obstacles inside of the track area before running another lap. Computer timing is provided on a manual basis and has caused issues from time to time, but they always seem to iron everything out in the end. Awards are given out to the top 3 male and female in the competitive class along with competitive masters. As an added bonus athletes competing in the competitive class have the option to take on either the elite strength or endurance competition following the event. Think of this as more of a Crossfit competition with separate top 3 winners.

Now onto the main course! Epic always starts off their race with athletes sprinting around the first lap while carrying a brightly colored Epic Series flag. After depositing the flag back at the start line the fun begins with a ladder wall traverse immediately followed by the atlas stone over the shoulder flip for reps.

Another lap around the event was now required, this time carrying a medicine ball. Butt to bucket overhead squats for reps with a weighted pipe was the next obstacle in line along with some box jump burpees before taking on the most unique balance beam in OCR. This nightmare of a balance test consists of 4X4 pegs mounted along beams suspended above the ground. The wobble factor here is at a maximum and it usually gets me at least once each event.  After a sprint lap around the track, a set of banded bunny hops got those quads burning before moving on to a 20-rep set of Russian twists with a medicine ball.

 A keg hoist started off the grip killing section of the course. Right after one more ladder wall traverse athletes picked up a set of jerry cans for a grip killing lap which led right into the rope climb. What a nasty way to completely trash your grip strength! From here athletes moved quickly onto a timed wall sit followed by more box jump burpees.

An inverted wall climb followed leading to another lap with a hard to balance slosh pipe. The ever-popular timed plank and lumberjacks made of 4×4 metal tubing required athletes to start digging ever deeper into their energy reserves. An over and under for reps using plastic tubing started off the last series of obstacles followed up with a bow and arrow shot into a target. If you’ve ever dreamed that you were Robin Hood this was your chance to live out your dream! One last climb over a wall with rock climbing holds led you to one final lap, this time with a keg on your shoulder! Drop the keg at the finish and collect your medal and your breath.

Now if you entered the open class race your day was over. But if you entered the competitive class you had the option, for a small additional price, to compete in either the Strength or Endurance Elite course. This was a scaled event for men and women with the strength course having heavier weights and lower reps than the endurance course, but both courses followed the same WOD in the same format. Top 3 awards were also presented to the winners here with a WWE style belt given to the champ in each division!

A small kids race focusing more on the fun was provided for a small fee and was packed with happy faces all day. Parking was free as were the “Epic” photos of the event. If your OCR roots started with a love of the gym, then this is your race. No one body type is perfect for this event as the great blend of obstacles really evens out the playing field. This event truly looks to find the fittest athlete and makes it my personal favorite. So, you like your OCR’s with a little less running and a few more obstacles huh? Does less run, more fun sound right up your alley? Then the Epic Series might be your future event of choice. With obstacles often lined up back to back and total running distances typically less than 2 total miles, Epic offers the ultimate OCR test of functional fitness. The Southern California based company held one of their outstanding events on April 23 at the Los Angeles Police Academy across the street from Dodger Stadium, and I was lucky enough to get the assignment to cover the event. This marked my second time covering an Epic event and the blend of functional fitness and OCR immediately made this my favorite race series. Epic offers three different levels of intensity on each obstacle. For Elite men and women, and for Open runners the difficulty will vary accordingly. For example, a keg carry meant a full keg for men’s elite, half full for women’s elite and empty for open class runners. As a bonus, elite division racers also got to participate in an extra CrossFit style event after the race for more trophies, which I’ll explain later in this article.

Waves started off at 8 a.m. with the elite division leading the way with upcoming waves following every 5 minutes. The Epic flag lap started off the course with a jog around the track carrying a large Epic Series flag on a pole. As a matter of fact, all obstacles were placed inside the track area making the course very compact and offering a great view for spectators along with offering a great opportunity for photos. After finishing the lap and dropping off your flag racers immediately transitioned into a low crawl followed up by a wall traverse. Now things started to get tougher. Atlas Stones over the shoulder for 15 repetitions was waiting next and really started to tax your cardio ability. When finished tossing the stones Epic transitioned into their unique balance obstacle. This consisted of a C shaped beam with small raised platforms placed about two feet apart that required racers to basically hop from one peg to the other. Once finished an athlete had to pick up a slosh pipe for another lap around the track.

After the slosh pipe sprint came the dreaded wall sit. Racers were required to hold an hour glass out in front of them while stuck in the 90-degree wall sit position for three agonizing minutes. Lumberjacks were the next bad ass obstacle on the list. You may have seen something similar on World’s Strongest Man on ESPN. This obstacle consisted on flipping over a long section of square metal tubing over and back. Heave it up, walk it to vertical and push it over before going to the other side and repeating the movement. 15 flips were required here and the task really took it out of you! The rope climb was the next obstacle in line with a twice up and down requirement for obstacle completion and then it was on to the timed plank. Once again, a three-minute hold was required after one flipped over the hour glass to start. I’m almost positive that was the longest three minutes ever. Once complete, athletes were required to run another lap, this one with nothing extra to carry which was a great relief to those of us who were already winded.

Upon completion of the sprint lap, the keg hoist was ready and waiting for you. Three repetitions to the top and back down once again tested that grip strength. A ladder wall followed up the keg hoist before moving on to the toughest obstacle I found at Epic. 15 reps of burpee box jump with a 36-inch-high box. Most of the elite competitors I saw were thoroughly gassed on this obstacle including yours truly. Things got slightly easier for the next two obstacles in line. An inverted wall climb and side to side ab twists with a 30-pound medicine ball. That small break was much needed because next up was another lap to run, with two full jerry cans! Traps and grip screaming towards the end of that lap I guarantee you!

After finally dropping off those damn cans, athletes were finally on the home stretch of the race. This started off with a unique obstacle called The Archer. Targets were lined up which required two hits with a bow and arrow. Yes, OCR with a bow and arrow! I bet you never thought you would see that in a race huh?  After racers got their fun playing Robin Hood a series of three walls were next in line. The Tri Wall, Ladder Wall, and another inverted wall all needed traversed before being led to Barnaby’s Wall which was kind of like a rock climb wall up and over. It was gut check time for the very last obstacle. One placed in this position to see who wanted it more. Athletes were required to run just one more lap, but with a full keg across their backs! Man, I couldn’t wait to ditch that damn can after that final lap. Once complete plenty of vendors were handing out various drinks and some cool bling was put around your neck.

Trophies were given out to the top 3 men and women overall and top 3 men and women masters. Little Epic kiddies had their own race to provide total family fun. Mix that with free parking and free EPIC pictures and you have quite an event! Sponsor tents were all over including The Vitamin Shoppe, BodyArmour Super Drink, Rush 10-8 Gear, and Live Sore with finishers shirts made by Clinch Gear. Now, this was a great event. But if you ran elite there was a little something extra waiting for you……

Set up in an adjoining parking lot was the Epic Strength and Endurance course – only for elite competitors. Elite athletes could choose one of the two with weights and reps being the only difference. First off was a police SUV pull for distance: jump into a harness, get low and go. Right after that was a push press: 10 reps with 135 for Endurance and 5 reps with 185 for strength. Immediately following that was the deadlift: 225 for 10 reps Endurance and 315 for 5 for the big boys. Right after that was an Atlas Stone you needed to throw over a wall and then proceed to jump over the wall for 5 repetitions. An unknown weight tire flip for 5 reps was next up followed by 15 step ups with heavy ass kettlebells. Finally, a sandbag lunge for distance was the last test before a sprint, or crawl to the finish line. Knowledgeable judges were provided for each competitor and a 15-minute time cap was used to keep things rolling. This separate event also gave out trophies for the top 3 male and female in each division. So, if you want a unique OCR race, or an awesome test of functional fitness you must try an Epic Series race in the future!

Epic Series Race San Diego 2017 – Be Epic.

With an event that coincided with the arrival of Pacific Storm Lucifer, the Epic Series race held in San Diego California lived up to its name and more.  The first Epic Series race of the year was held in the parking lot of the artists formerly known as the San Diego Chargers (too soon Chargers fans?).  This race truly had something for everyone, not only capable of challenging elite athletes, but able to provide a fantastic first race for those new to the world of Obstacle Course Racing.  You may be asking yourself what about this race allows it to appeal to such a wide audience.  Read on to find out.

The race was held on Saturday February 18th, a day which started overcast, but warmed up as the day progressed with a good amount of sunshine for all those attending to appreciate.  Though the course was somewhat wet due to the massive amounts of rain which fell the night before, it dried up throughout the day.  The weather and some technical difficulty with electric generators caused the race to be delayed by about 45 minutes with the first scheduled heat taking off at about 0845 as opposed to 0800.  This didn’t seem to cause any issues as the music was blasting and multiple vendors were set up peddling their wares and enticing the crowds.  Though the race had a cut off time to register on their website, onsite registration was available for those interested.

The Epic Series race is broken up into two separate events.  The first, the Epic race, is open to everyone.  Both Elites and those running the Open waves run the Epic race.  The second part of the race is the Elites course and as you could probably guess, is open only to those in the Elite heats.  The Elite heats are released every five minutes during the first hour of the race.  More on the Elite course later.  Epic Series races bill themselves as being obstacle heavy with short race courses and no mud.  The race states that weather may cause mud at a race depending on the Venue, but the race will never intentionally create mud.  In this case they delivered as promised.  Being that the course was on asphalt, mud was not an issue.  In total the distance run on the course came in at about 1.75 miles, approximately half the distance of a normal Obstacle Course 5K.

What makes the Epic Series race so good for athletes of any ability is the unique design of their obstacles.  The obstacles are color coded, green for beginner, blue for intermediate, and black for advanced and are designed with differing degrees of difficulty.  For the Elites, women must complete at least the intermediate obstacles while men must complete the advanced.  Failure to do so will result in disqualification from competition, though the racer is encouraged to continue the race.

The race starts out with a full lap around the course with an Epic flag in hand.  After the initial lap the racer comes to the first obstacle, a wall jump.  Three walls, all color coded, are available to jump over all based on the level of difficulty you choose.  After the wall jump comes a quick net crawl, and then on to the atlas stones.  The atlas stones are also color coded, with the advanced stones being heaviest.  After 10 Atlas Stone over the shoulders, it’s on too burpee box jumps.  The height of your box is dependent on the level of difficulty you choose.  After burpee box jumps, it’s on to the ladder wall, which is basically a regular wall with cut outs.  You then move on to overunders.  This was one of the few obstacles I took issue with not because of the obstacle itself, but because there were only two ropes set up.  This meant that even if you shared and alternated only four people at a time could use the obstacle.  A few more ropes set up would have been nice.


From the overunders, it was on to a balance beam.  After the balance beam was the first of four laps of the course, not including the initial lap.  Three of these laps involved carrying something.  This first lap was the slosh pipe, which was weighted and sized based on difficulty level.  After the lap you went straight into overhead squats using a weighted PVC pipe.  Next was Russian twists using a weighted ball, then another ladder wall followed by the first inverted wall.  After the inverted wall was the inflatable obstacle, which due to the aforementioned generator issues was not working.  After a quick detour around the inflatable you arrived at the rope climb rig.  What I really liked about this rig was the way they set up the levels of advancement.  2 rope climbs for advanced, one for intermediate, and a cargo net climb for beginner.  Epic Race did a good job at providing obstacles of varying levels so that anyone truly could participate in the course.  After the rope climb came a timed plank using an hour glass.  I don’t know what the time was for the advanced hourglass but I would estimate it at sometime between 2 minutes and eternity.  After the plank it was a quick unweighted sprint around the course to the other side of the rope climb rig which had a keg hoist.

After the keg hoist, came the lumberjack.  For those who haven’t seen the lumberjack before, myself included up till this race, it’s a heavy weighted bar on a pivot which must be lifted up and pushed until it falls down on the other side.  After that came an exercise using strength bands (see giant rubber bands).  After shimmying into a band you were required to do a set distance there and back of side steps, bunny hops, and a run/hobble.  From this it was on to the squat wall.  You placed your back up against the wall, got into the squat position, and keeping your arms extended, held another hourglass to time yourself.  The same 2 minute to eternity hourglass was employed for this exercise.  After the squat, I was more than happy to get moving into the gas can carry lap, which involved carrying a gas can in each hand.  After this lap came a fun obstacle, the bow and arrow, Epic Series spear throw if you will.  A regular re-curve bow was the weapon of choice.  You had 5 chances to hit an approximately 1ft by 1ft metal plate roughly 10 feet away.  Luckily the arrows were tipped with giant balls of foam to avoid any serious injuries.


After the fun came a tire drag and then another round of atlas stone over the shoulders.  This was followed by the second inverted wall, and then another regular wall.  After the regular wall it was a set of box jump chest to ground.  This was followed by the largest wall on the course.  Depending on the difficulty, the climber was given less or more hand and footholds to ascend the wall.  After this wall was the final lap, carrying a keg.  With the last lap completed and the keg dropped off, it was a short sprint to the finish where your bib number was recorded for your time and you received your medal and a bottle of water.  Quick side note here, shirts are also included as part of the race but are picked up at check in.  With that there is nothing left to do but give yourself a pat on the back and enjoy the good vibes.  That is unless you were running in the elite class, in which case it’s on to the elite’s course.


This is another thing that sets Epic apart.  The race itself is no longer considered to be enough.  The Elite course truly separated the wheat from the chaff and was a difficult course all its own.  The Elite course itself is further broken down into the strength versus endurance course.  Strength obstacles are higher weight but less reps.  Endurance obstacles are lower weight but more reps.  I opted for the Endurance course and was glad I did, as it was difficult enough as it was.

Epic Series race winners are determined based on the Epic race run time combined with their Elite course time.  Competitors run the course one at a time, with someone going every fifteen minutes.  Each competitor has a judge who goes with them throughout the entire course.  Special shout out to my judge Moe Bautista for motivating me the entire way through.  Each competitor gets 15 minutes to complete the 10 obstacles with mandatory obstacle completion for everything but the first obstacle.  The first obstacle, which is a truck pull, has a time limit of 90 seconds.  Failure to complete the truck pull results in a two minute and thirty second penalty assessment added on to a racers final competitive time.  Any other obstacle not completed also incurs the 2:30 time penalty.  With mandatory obstacle completion for all but the first obstacle, this means failure to complete the second obstacle would add thirty seven minutes and thirty seconds onto a racers final time.

As stated, the first obstacle was a truck pull, a newer year model Chevy Colorado quad cab to be exact.  The racer used an over the shoulder harness to pull the vehicle.  This obstacle was made slightly more difficult because it was on asphalt which remained somewhat slick due to rain from the night before.  The next obstacle was the overhead barbell press.  You were required to get it up from the ground and then press it for reps.  This exercise did quite a few people in and I saw people struggling all day with this particular obstacle.  I believe this was due to the fact you had to lift the bar into position instead of getting it from a racked position.  From the press it was on to deadlifts.  After deadlifts was an atlas stone lift over the wall.  After lifting the stone over the wall you were required to yourself jump over the wall.  Next was a farmer’s carry, followed by a tire flip.  After the tire flip were kettlebell box step ups followed by sandbag lunges.  Then it was a simple sprint to the finish.  Normally the sprint would have instead consisted of a rope climb.  Epic Series announced on its various social media pages the night before the race that the rope climb would be cancelled to due high winds that day, up to 60 mph gusts, which did not allow for safe set up of the obstacle.  Good on Epic Series for watching out for the safety of both its racers and set up personnel on that one.


Overall, I would say the Epic Series race truly lives up to its name.  With something for everyone, from competitive athletes to those new to the sport of OCR, Epic Series allows you to challenge yourself at whatever level you’re currently at.  I liked that instead of simply not doing an obstacle or taking the penalty, you were given a choice based on your comfort level and ability.  Epic Series is currently only based in the Southern California area but is well worth the trip if you’re considering going.  For those interested, the next race is currently scheduled for April the 23rd, at the LAPD police academy.

EPIC Series – San Diego – June 11

RobbField2016-211-LOn June 11th Robb Athletic Complex in San Diego hosted the OCR/Crossfit crossover event EPIC Series. This short {2 miles} course offered 33 different obstacles to overcome and was every bit as tough as advertised. Epic Series offered Elite and Open classes along with a second event the same day for Elites. After they punished you through their 2-mile course, elite racers could choose between a strength or endurance course for separate prizes. So, two events for the price of one for elites. The kids race, parking, and bag check were all FREE! Also spectators could cheer on their friends and family at no additional cost. There were vendors showcasing gear and selling food.  A D.J. kept everyone energized and on schedule with music and timely announcements. Upon completion of the race, each participant received a finisher’s medal and a free t-shirt. Women were offered the choice of a tank which was a nice change of pace.

The course that everyone ran was segmented at most obstacles into Advanced, Intermediate, and Novice. Obstacles varied on the weights of the objects to be carried, the number of required reps, the amount of time required, or the height of the obstacle. Staggering heats every 5 minutes, athletes were instructed at the start to carry a large Epic Series flag for 400 meters around the field of obstacles in an oval, dropping them off back at the start line. This was the easiest part of the course by far. From there on it was hot and heavy on the obstacles. A series of several walls, including a couple inverted walls, to be climbed over started the obstacle parade.  Next, a very low and long crawl that left everyone dizzy led to the Epic Series’ version of the balance beam. Athletes were to balance on a crescent shaped series of pegs that were mounted to beams. The Elite racers’ beam was narrower and more flexible than the other two beams. What a unique way to make a balance obstacle! Up next for 15 reps was a box jump into a burpee. An Atlas stone throw (over the shoulder) and an over/under bar rounded out that leg.

Racers then changed pace and went through an inflatable obstacle/slide to get back in touch with their youth. After a short rope climb, athletes were led back to the start line where a slosh pipe was to be picked up and carried while running around the 400-meter course and dropped back off at the start line. Another group of obstacles awaited that began with a timed plank, followed immediately by a keg hoist for reps and a strongman mainstay, Epic built metal pipes that needed to be flipped over 10 times. A short tire drag and an elastic band hop really started to make the misery set in as they then led you to a test of grip strength. Racers were instructed to carry 2 Jerry Cans while running once again around the 400-meter course.


With traps on fire, athletes were sent to a timed wall sit and then straight into another peg balance obstacle! Epic then gave us a small break as we were set up with a bow and arrow that were used to hit a target twice before continuing on to another round of burpee box jumps and Atlas stone throw. The last thing Epic challenged you with was a final jog around the 400-meter course, all while carrying a keg on your back and shoulders. What an Epic Finale to the All-Levels Obstacle Course! Top 3 elite males and top 3 elite females were awarded trophies and swag bags for their achievement.


But that’s not all! The event got even tougher for the Elite athletes who now had to choose between a strength or endurance short course where the obstacles were the same, but the weights/reps varied. A judge followed around each athlete on this course making sure reps were properly executed and counted correctly. Athletes started off being harnessed to a large truck to pull, followed up by a set of 10 on the military press. Drop that weight on the ground and on to the lunge for distance with a loaded bar on your back. Starting to sound tough right? Just wait. Drop the bar off your shoulders from the lunge and it was time to pick up a set of kettlebells for a 10 count step up onto a box. Now very winded athletes had to pick up an Atlas stone and throw it over a wall before then jumping over the wall for a set of 5. A farmer carry for distance followed this up and led to a barbell loaded up for 10 reps of a strict deadlift. A series of 3 Atlas stones of varying weight was up next all leading to a final 30-foot rope climb. The top 3 male and 3 female athletes on this separate course also were awarded trophies.


I found the Epic Series to be an outstanding blend of functional strength and stamina all wrapped into one outstanding event. Always improving and making the course design better by actually walking around and talking to athletes is a great way to keep giving OCR and Crossfit athletes what they want. The swag was nice and the area was clean and well maintained. The only recommendations for improvement: first – expand the number of restrooms available, having only two meant there were long lines, and the basin filled very full; second, a bit more climbing, perhaps taller climbing walls or cargo net climbs. In the end, I found this to be one of my new favorite events. Based solely in Southern California, I’d love to see them expand to other parts of the US. Talks of finding new event locations are currently in the works. My conclusion is that if you like less running and more obstacles, with a variance in difficulty at each obstacle to allow all levels of athletes to challenge themselves, this is the race for you!EPIC Series San Diego - Archery
