Derik Martin was born Diane. He knew in his heart at a very young age that he was gay. In recent months, Derik decided to take hormones and had top surgery to begin the transition of becoming a male. Derik also happens to be someone that loves obstacle races.
Many questions are being raised about trans athletes. We as an industry need to look at these issues and address them. We discuss topics including obstacles, changing tents, and educating race staff and volunteers.
Please listen in as we interview one of the first openly trans OCR athletes.

I had to stop at minute 16:10 for a moment. Don’t ask someone “female to male” about “male to female” issues. You both clearly don’t know much, if anything, about the “male to female” process and WHY the International Olympic Committee decided to allow it. (Guess what they found? No advantage for trans women after a certain period of time on HRT. In fact, some studies showed that trans women were at an athletic disadvantage to their cis women counterparts, believed to be due to trans women having less testosterone then cis women.) While I’m thrilled for Derik, what he’s done, and what he represents for trans men in the community, but he is not a representative of trans women. Any question to him regarding trans women is incredibly inappropriate.
If you want to learn about athletes transitioning from male to female, talk to a male to female athlete. Hi, what’s up?
