SISU#LikeaGirl 2017 – Who Wants to go Down Under? APPLY NOW

SISU#LikeaGirl - Alums at WTM 2016

Coming off a successful 2016, SISU#LikeaGirl is ready to tackle 2017.

In late 2014, following World’s Toughest Mudder, and numerous conversations about the lack of female representation at obstacle course races and endurance events, an idea was born.  Create a team of amazing women and have them travel the globe representing Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) and Endurance Events.  Witness the birth of SISU#LikeaGirl!  A few comments to some friends and the team was quickly brought together.

SISU#LikeaGirl - Toughest 24hr Xtreme

Having finished 3rd at the Toughest 24hr in 2015 and 2nd and 3rd at the Rat Race Dirty Double in 2016, SISU#LikeaGirl has set its eyes set on Australia and the True Grit Enduro 24hr.  We know that a team of four amazing women intent on showcasing what women working together can accomplish is ready to take on the world – quite literally!

The inaugural event was chosen to be Toughest 24hr Xtreme…Europe’s first 24hr OCR.  Held in Solvalla, Stockholm in Sweden on June 27, 2015, and produced by the respected Toughest race series, the race was held on a 1km track with 10 obstacles and was a brutal assault on the mind and body.  I don’t think a single hand emerged unscathed.  The team was not 100% healthy at the time of competition, but SISU is about persevering, pushing through your lowest lows and banding together with brethren when you think you have nothing left in the tank.  The inaugural team was composed of Amie “LiveWire” Booth, Leah Erickson, Morgan McKay, and Danielle Ross.  They battled bronchitis, hypothermia, fatigue, and were even down to 9 arms between them, as Amie ran the entire race with her left arm strapped to her chest, due to a pre-existing injury.  These women fought – shared – laughed – helped – taught – cried!  You see – Europe had never seen an endurance race like this. I think the ladies will agree, the camaraderie and friendship born beneath the rollers and Dry Robes, whilst sharing Epic Bars and Honey Badger hydration was worth it all!

SISU#LikeaGirl - Rat Race

The 2016 SISU#LikeaGirl team was initially comprised of Amy Palmiero-Winters, Camille McCue, Kristy Johnson-McBride, and Brenna “Red Beast” Calvert.  Again, life intervened and Amy and Camille were not able to participate, and our alternate wasn’t able to get time off work, so Amie Booth stepped in (despite still recovering from shoulder reconstruction) and she, along with Kristy Johnson-McBride and Brenna Calvert, took on the Rat Race Dirty Double – 40 miles and 400 obstacles of awesome (including the world’s longest monkey bars).  Brenna had never taken on an event of this length, and Kristy (a seasoned endurance racer) made sure that Brenna succeeded…which is exactly what SISU#LikeaGirl is all about.  Kristy and Brenna crossed the finish line together in a tie for 2nd place (also 2nd place for females in the history of the race).  Amie, finished the Full Mucker taking first in her age group, despite restrictions due to injury.

This brings me to today.  SISU#LikeaGirl isn’t about these amazing women.  It’s about ALL women!  Each year, the previous years’ teams will pick their replacements…and it’s that time. We’ve picked the venue – True Grit Enduro 24hr (team) in Hawkesbury River, New South Wales, Australia,  June 10, 2017, benefiting Legacy Australia and Commando Welfare Trust. 24 hrs as a team, relay style, on military inspired obstacles down under.  Now, we just need to pick the team. INTERESTED?
