We thought the year was over for podcasts, til we found Joe Desena was able to hop on a quick call to discuss this video Spartan put out.

Why is he so in favor of more burpees and less obstacle innovation?

  1. Timing chips. Keep the timing chips for Elites and Competitive Wave and standardize what an “acceptable” burpee is, and monitor them closely. Remove the timing chip for the Open wave racers and let them “Run their own race” with burpees or no burpees, or however they want.

  2. I am strongly considering my first race to be April 2018 and right now can barely do 10 burpees right now. If you increase it for all individuals, it would discourage me since I’ve never done this. I can see why you would increase it for the more advanced though

    1. I totally agree, Sarah. Why not raise the levels for the Elites and keep the Open at 30 or even less. It just doesn’t make sense to require the Open racers to perform at the same level of those that get paid to prepare for the next race every day.

  3. Great interview.

I thought your question to him about the person racing in Virginia for the third year was on point. His “but did they win” response to feeling bored makes sense as a sport, but how many OCR participants does that actually speak to? I’b be surprised if Spartan or any race series is held together by enough registrants that see themselves as actual “athletes” versus people that like having fun doing something weird and physical.

  4. I guess I’ll go do the Warrior Dash instead. Unless these 50 burpees are enforced about as well as the 30 burpees for the non-competitive waves … in which case, why not make it 100! LOL.

    Please don’t make it 100.
