WTM 2nd Thoughts

Amelia Boone is out, she previously told us she would be a game time decision, but moments ago shared this post via her Facebook page.

I firmly believe that the smartest decisions are also the hardest decisions. While I continue to make steady progress in healing and rehab, I also respect the enormous physical demands that a 24-hour endeavor like World’s Toughest 1426208_10100320913473652_1392915381_nMudder places on your body. And unfortunately, despite pulling out all the stops, the body just isn’t there yet. But it will be, soon.

The trusty green beanie will be there this weekend (albeit a bit late), but as a volunteer, spectator and supporter of my fellow athletes. There will be a new female World’s Toughest Mudder this year. But the beanie will be there again at WTM 2014, ready to reclaim that title.

Best of luck to my fellow WTM’ers. I expect to see you all at the finish line.

In contrast, 2 time defending champ Junyong Pak is not shying away from the giant target on his back:

Several folks have asked how to remain calm with an impending storm looming such as with World’s Toughest Mudder this weekend. Can’t speak for anyone else, but for me, I sleep knowing that I know how to “sit-and-kick”. Strictly speaking, in the world of track & field this expression refers to a race tactic where one “sits” on the heels of the leader throughout the race, whatever that pace may be, and delivers a furious “kick” to run past him at the finish. But this tactic only works if you are comfortable letting someone else control the pace entirely… and you are strong, capable, disciplined enough to go when you need to. I like to extend this to a figurative “sit-and-kick” where in a race or life in general you know you can hang with whatever wicked comes your way, confident there will be a knockout punch waiting in reserves. I know that nobody is going to beat me simply by being a better runner. No one will beat me with merely better race tactic or strategy or preparedness. No one by being only tougher or stronger. Talent alone will only get you so far. I have no doubt that there are many people who are capable of beating me. But if you want to do so, here is exactly how:

Match me stride-for-stride in every aspect of mental, physical, psychological capacity… and then take a few looks back as you hold off an unrelenting kick in the 24th hour. Because, I sit and kick in every sense of these words.
