Obstacle Shows Invade Atlanta

3 big Atlanta events

The new Spartan Race team competition reality show was taped in Fairburn, GA in December of 2015. The location was Bouckaret Farms, which has been Tough Mudder‘s Georiga venue choice since 2014.

Teams of 5 (1 “Spartan Pro” plus a team of 4 cast for the show, ) were required to complete a course with massive scale obstacles, most of which required all 5 members working together to complete. The show is set to air 6 episodes sometime in 2016.

Spartan Team Show Start Line

Beginning March 14, 3 more major events will be happening  in the Atlanta area,  which will be of interest to OCR fans.

Event 1:     BattleFrog College Championship Season 2

Location:   Lake Lanier, Georgia

The 1st season of the series aired 3 episodes on ESPN  last June, was seen by 2 million viewers, and was met with positive reviews. An array of 16 universities sent teams of 4 to compete against each other in a bracket style format tournament.

The live-action, short course, format was a change from the documentary style of the Spartan Race TV Series, that has been airing on NBC since December 2013.

BattleFrog, and “veteran TV sports content specialists” 51 Dons, will begin taping Season 2. According to a recent press release “The show will once again feature 16 of America’s top college obstacle course racing teams going head-to-head to capture the coveted Trident Cup and a grand prize scholarship”.

The already scheduled BattleFrog Series races (elite, open, BFX) will take place on Saturday March 19th. The show will most likely tape the 15-20th at the same location. We will release more details as we receive them.

Event 2:     American Ninja Warrior Season 8 Qualifiers/Finals

Location:  Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia

American Ninja Warrior will have tape episodes in Atlanta, GA for the first time ever. Previous ” regional qualifying” cities include Dallas, Miami, Baltimore, Denver, St. Louis, Houston, Kansas City, Orlando, and Pittsburgh. Along with 2 locations in California; Venice Beach and San Pedro.

As in recent ANW seasons, the city qualifiers will have a little over 100 contestants attempting to compete for 30 slots in the City Finals. From there, the top 15 (those who complete the course, plus those who make it the farthest, the fastest) make it to the Season Finals, usually in Vegas.

One of those “qualifying” contestants this year will be Obstacle Racing Media’s own Christian Griffith, aka Cranky Bastard.

After initially submitting his video in 2015, Christian was accepted this time around. (Bonus ORM love to Jeff Marier who shot and produced this video that got Christian chosen.)

Additional Southeast based ninjas competing that you may recognize are NinjaKour Gym owner “Doc Ninja” Robert Pruni. “Crazy” Neil Craver of Team Golden Hearts from the recently aired Team Ninja Warrior will also be on the course. Grace Jones of Team Stratisfaction from Team Ninja will be down there as well. Ryan Stratis himself, is injured, but he will be at Turner Field, cheering on his fellow teammates.

The Qualifier will tape on the 18th with City Finals taping on the 19th. Stay tuned for more details.

Event 3:     Tough Mudder Training Event with Coach

Location:   Piedmont Park, Atlanta, Georgia

Coach T. Mud from the informative and hilarious Coachified video series is coming to town. Similar to the Spartan Workout Tour, this event looks like a great time to do some training with some OCR/Mudder buddies. It also looks like a great opportunity to bring a friend you are trying to introduce to our world.

Updates and additional info will be on the official Facebook event page.

Note: As soon as we became aware of this event, we informed Tough Mudder of the already scheduled BattleFrog (and Muddy Brute) which had already been on the calendar. TMHQ understood, but were not able to move their event date.

Bonus Event:       Blind Pete trains with Coach

Location:               OCR King Compound

On Sunday, March 20th, Coach will be shooting a new video at OCR King Compound in Dallas, Georgia. The video will feature Coach working with a visually impaired obstacle racer who calls himself Blind Pete.

Stay in touch with OCR King Compound for times and details for a chance to participate, and perhaps be in this new video.
