Spartan Race Launching “Short Course” TV Show

Spartan TV Show

NBC, Spartan Race, and A. Smith & Co. productions are announcing a new television show today. The show is being put together by the same company that produces American Ninja Warrior, which also airs on NBC. ANW has been a huge hit every summer and has featured several obstacle racers in current and previous seasons.

The press release does not go into great detail, but we can tell you that it will launch in 2016 and will follow teams of 5 through a 2-3 mile, obstacle dense course. The teams will all leave the start line at the same time as opposed to the relay style race we saw with The BattleFrog College Championships.

4 members of each team (two men and two women) will participate through casting tryouts. The 5th teammate will be an “elite athlete” who will be hand picked by the show and be the team captain. When we spoke with Spartan COO Jeffrey Connor this afternoon, he told us the elite athlete could be someone from the Spartan Pro Team, or another top level athlete from another field.

Mr. Connor went on to tell us “When we set out talking with NBC and Arthur Smith’s team, we decided that making the show the definitive team competition was a top priority. The show and course will be unlike anything that we’ve seen before. It’s going to take the action-oriented competition series to the next level and be a perfect complement to our Race Series on NBCSN.”

The complete press release is below.

There’s a great teams and competitive groups down hear

  2. SO disappointing to fill in all of that info and be excited to fill it in and then realize at the end that my sin is to be born in Canada. sigh. I will never understand the US only resident rules.

    1. We do what we have to do to protect ourselves from the Great White Satan to the North. As it stands, Shania Twain is still lurking somewhere in Nevada, and I won’t even start on Celine Dion. Hasn’t America suffered enough at your hands, Canada?

  3. It will be interesting to see if they manage to lure pro athletes from other sports. Anyone you think would be especially good?
