Tough Mudder History
Tough Mudder is an obstacle course racing event series where people attempt a 10+ mile military inspired obstacle course race. The race series was designed and created by Will Dean and Guy Livingstone, two British Harvard Business School post graduates, and tests mental as well as physical strength.
Their first race was held near Allentown, PA, in 2010, and had a remarkable turn out of 4,500. After the inaugural Tough Mudder event they followed up with two more races in 2010 and 14 more in 2011. A standard Tough Mudder course since they became a regular race in 2012 consists of a 10-12 mile run with 10-15 obstacles of varying mental and physical difficulty per race.
Their is also the annual event that is Tough Mudder’s championship called the Worlds Toughest Mudder which is a completely different format. Worlds Toughest or WTM as it’s affectionately called is a 24 hour race to complete as many loops as possible of the course. WTM was initially held in New Jersey for many years but has since moved to the desert outside of Las Vegas. It is where legends such as Junyong Pak made a name for himself as the 2011 and 2012 champion until being over taken by Ryan Atkin for 2013 and 2014. On the womens side you have had champions and equally as legendary winner Amelia Boone in 2012 and 2014.
